In Ancient Times/Ancient Story: Peppermint is a hybrid of different species of the plant known as Mentha from the family Lamiaceae, specifically the water mint and spearmint, making for a unique spin on an already well-known plant. Most hybrids in the Lamiaceae family occur naturally in nature, eventually giving birth to a delightful herb which is indigenous to Europe and the Middle East. Mint has thousands of years of history behind it, used for its unique flavor, fresh and aromatic scent, and its nutritional properties. Historically, records from ancient Greece, Rome, Asia, and Egypt mention the use of mint in practical, therapeutic, and cultural practices, and it was a prominent figure of interest in Greek mythology, as well as ancient Egyptian rituals.
Ancient Usage: Pliny documented the Greeks and Romans adding mint to bath water, as well as cosmetics, sauces, and wines. In Rome, mint was cooked to freshen the air during meals and special events, often sitting at tables and used in homemade crowns worn by some guests. It was also spread on floors to repel insects. Traditionally, Peppermint has been used to prevent and treat stomach issues such as gas, diarrhea, and spasms, along with colds and the flu, hysteria, anxiety, and headaches. Egyptian pharaohs were often buried with peppermint leaves and essential oils, the oils being favored by tomb raiders.
Ancient Beliefs: Peppermint was utilized in Greek mythology, the nymph Mentha (or Minthe) being brought back to life by Pluto as a fragrant plant after being murdered by his wife, who was jealous from learning that the two were lovers. Alexander the great forbid his soldiers from using, diffusing, wearing, or ingesting Peppermint as it was believed to promote erotic thoughts and distract them from their training and reduce their desire to kill.
