In Ancient Times/Ancient Story: Our Cordial Chamomile Essential Oil is steam distilled from German chamomile flowers, which contain a higher percentage of chamazulene than Roman chamomile. Chamazulene is what gives chamomile oil its blue to blue-green hue, as well as providing the nourishing properties that make chamomile a wonderful addition to moisturizers. German chamomile is considered the “true chamomile” along with Roman chamomile.
“Chamomile” comes from the word chamaimelon meaning “earth-apple” in Greek, since the delicious aroma resembles that of an apple. Hailing from Europe, West Asia, and North Africa, Chamomile flowers were depicted in numerous writings describing various homeopathic remedies of their time periods and cultures, with ancient hieroglyphs of at least 2000 years of age being found in Egypt detailing the flower’s numerous applications in Egyptian life.
Ancient Usage: Chamomile was found in Egyptian teas, herbal salves, and beauty enhancing cosmetics. It was also part of ceremonial mummification, as well as being used to reduce excess heat in the ailing and infirm.
Ancient Beliefs: Roman soldiers carried and used chamomile since they believed it would give them courage and clarity on the battlefield. Meanwhile, the ancient Egyptians exalted the magnificent chamomile flower over all other herbs as represented by its symbolism of the sun and the sun god Ra.
