During late medieval times, German physician Valerius Cordius and Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner collectively distilled myrrh oil (in 1540) and recognized its usefulness for ointments and external remedies.

In Egypt, it was used soothe irritation and minor injuries, as well as to embalm Egyptian mummies. Egyptian noble women also used myrrh oil to rejuvenate their skin as part of their beauty routine.
Resins are the oldest form of incense and myrrh resin was burned during religious ceremonies, including the sacred temples of old Jerusalem. In China, the resin was and is still used to relieve muscle discomfort and inflammation, believed to promote circulation of the blood, and ancient Greek soldiers carried vials of myrrh oil as part of their equipment to aid in recovery from battle.
