Gracious Egyptian Geranium
Like the origins of its Greek name, Pelargos (stork) and the myths associated with the delivery of new life, Geranium traveled from South Africa to Europe and China, gaining notoriety as an herbal panacea due to its versatile remedial properties.
Geranium is considered beneficial for all skin types, which explains why Geranium oil is widely used in the manufacturing of soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, and skincare products. Because Geranium’s fragrance resembles that of Rose, it is often used in the adulteration of Rose essential oil. Additionally, its leaves are used as a food flavoring and brewed as tea. Geranium is now cultivated and harvested in many regions around the world, Egypt and China being the main producers and exporters of its essential oil.

In Ancient Times/Ancient Story: Geranium has been grown in the Yunnan Province of China for hundreds of years and was incorporated into the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine long before it was popularized in the west.
Geranium oil was first distilled in France by the chemist Recluz in the year 1819 although it was not grown commercially for this purpose in Egypt or China until the 1970’s.
Ancient Usage: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Geranium was and is thought to have an affinity for the elements of wood and earth. It was sometimes used by acupuncturists and applied over an acupoint prior to needling in order to enhance the therapeutic benefits of the oil.
Ancient Beliefs: Geranium is derived from the Latin geranos, meaning "crane." For this reason, Geranium is also associated with its animalistic symbolism of immortality in Chinese Taoism and longevity in Japan.
